The objective of this study was to evaluate the insecticidal activity of diatomaceous earth (DE) at different ambient temperatures on adult Sitophilus zeamais and progeny, using different doses and exposure periods. The experiments were performed in Petri dishes containing 40 g of the whole corn kernel, treated with DE at doses of 0, 0.25, 0.5 and 1.0 kg Mg-1. Each dish was infested with 25 S. zeamais adults and kept at climatic chambers under temperatures of 20, 25, 30, 35 and 40 oC. The insect mortality was recorded after six and 15 days from the beginning of the bioassays. The grains evaluated at 15 days were separated from insects and kept in the dishes for another 75 days under the same temperature conditions. After this period the effect of ambient temperature and of diatomaceous earth doses on the emergence of S. zeamais in the F1 generation was evaluated. It was found that the mortality of S. zeamais increased with the higher dose and temperature during the exposure period of six and 15 days. The number of insects emerged reduced with increasing temperature in these two exposure periods. The increase of temperature and exposure period favored the efficacy of DE in lower doses for control of S. zeamais. |

ABSTRACT - Mineral supplementation is necessary when forage does not meet the animals' requirements. Daily supplement consumption aims to meet the deficit needed for weight gain, and can be modified by palatability through the sodium content of the mixture and/or the inclusion of flavorings. The aim of this study was to evaluate two levels of flavoring in mineral supplements on supplement consumption, trough behavior and performance in beef cattle. 80 Nelore steers (11 ± 2.5 months) were used, divided into four batches of 20 animals each, allocated to Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu pasture. The treatments consisted of mineral supplementation for rearing (65 P), with flavoring at a concentration of 750 g/tonne (T750), 500 g/tonne (T500), and no flavoring (Control). Behavior was monitored using an RFID system. In the first phase, the mineral mixtures were prepared with 40% white salt, in the second phase with 20%. A completely randomized design was used and the means were compared using the Student?s t-test at a 5% significance level. In phase 1, there were no differences in supplement consumption between the treatments. In phase 2, there was higher consumption (P = 0.027) for T750 x Control (78.9 and 68.1 g/animal/day, respectively), and higher consumption (P<0.001) for T500 x Control (81.2 and 62.6 g/animal/day, respectively). In phase 1, the animals in batch T750 made 113 more visits to the supplement trough during the week compared to the Control (P = 0.179), 251 and 138 visits/batch/week, respectively. In phase 2, the number of visits to the trough was higher in the treatments with flavoring T750 x Control (P<0.001), with 460 and 84 visits/batch/week, respectively, and in T500 x Control (P<0.025), with 515 and 148 visits/batch/week, respectively. In both phases, the number of weekly visits per animal was higher in the treatments with flavoring compared to the Control, except for T500 x Control, which in phase 1 were similar. In phase 1, T500 had a higher (P = 0.032) GMD compared to the Control (0.359 and 0.284 kg/animal/day, respectively). In phase 2, the highest (P = 0.006) GMD was observed in T750 compared to the Control (0.375 and 0.307 kg/animal/day, respectively). Flavorings attract more animals to the supplement trough during the week. As sodium is reduced, flavorings have an effect on supplement consumption.
